5:31 am
moments, we'll show you what you missed. first let's get to the news live at 5:30 a.m. rupert murdoch and his son james appearing at a british parliament hearing to address that ongoing hacking scandal surrounding their company news corporation. the elder murdoch called this the most humbling day of his career. british lawmakers grilled murdoch for hours, but the media mogul insisted that he is not to blame for on the incident that brought down his tabloid news of the world. >> did you close it because of the criminality? >> yes, we felt ashamed at what had happened. >> do you accept ultimately you're responsible for the whole fiasco? >> no. >> you're not? who is responsible? >> the people that i trusted to run it and then maybe the people they trusted. >> the former ceo of murdoch's news international group rebekah

brooks, she also answered questions in front of the committee yesterday. brooks offered a personal apology saying she was shocked by reports that journalists had hacked a teenage murder victim's phone. but the biggest fireworks came when a protester tried to hit murdoch in the face with a shaving cream pie. there it is. murdoch's wife wendy raced to defend her 80-year-old husband, smacking the attacker in the head. big jab. we'll have more on the man behind the pie all later in the show. by the way, in about an hour from now, the uk prime minister david minister, he's expected to speak in front of parliament hoping to stop further damage to the government from this scandal. so to get some of the latest on the investigation and a preview of what will happen in today's speech, martin flesher joins us live from london. there is an emergency session of parliament today, this has brought david cameron back into
5:33 am
the country to be able to speak before the people there. what do we expect to hear? >> that's right, today's highlight, every day brings some dramatic development. today the star there will be david cameron. he actually called for the emergency session. he cut short a trip to africa to try to take control of this. he'll face a grilling, though. the key questions will be very significant questions for him. why did he hire a former news of the world editor despite warnings, how much did he know about the phone hacking investigation, when did he know it, and also whether anyone had any role into the phone hooking. he also faced questions about how many times he met murdoch and top staff. but the key issue is did corruption in murdoch's newspaper and increasingly among

the police, did it spread to 10 downing street. so it will be a fascinating session in parliament today set to start in about an hour and a half. >> so the house of commons is releasing this report accusing news international of attemptsiattempting to thwart the phone hacking. >> the committee released a report and said they deplore news international's attempts to dwort the original investigation by the police into phone hacking. that was in 2005. but it also said in this report that the police also set aside a huge amount of material that could have identified other perpetrators and victims so that there's still a lot of recrimination and major investigation still to come. >> martin fletchner the uk for us. we appreciate it very much. it's worth noting the front of the daily news, a big picture of murdoch that says humble pie.
5:35 am
the paper owns by news corp itself, nowhere to be found. all in the family it says. you have to turn to the business section to find anything on that. in washington now, dueling debt plans are now taking center stage in congress. in a vote that was largely along party lines, the house passed the so-called cut, cap and balance bill. it happened last night. afterwards, a jim jordan along with chase son chavitz also pressed the senate to take up a vote. >> let's have the senate bring up this plan and have the vote. what are they afraid of, why not bring it up? if you follow conventional wisdom, you never get anything of real meaning done. >> if the senate lines up this punt formation, i think across it country you'll see black that punt because this is a real plan that will actually solve the underlying problem and that's why you have such broad support here today. >> despite the gop's push, it's expected to fail in the democratic controlled senate.
5:36 am
but a new propose how from this bipartisan gang of six is gathering support in the other chamber. tom coburn happens to be obama's closest friend in the senate as a republican. he had left the group, rejoined yesterday to help push this plan. and among the other things this package would do, it would reduce the deficit by close to $4 trillion, 3$3.7 trillion to e exact, it would cut taxes by over $1.5 trillion over ten years, implement $500 billion in immediate cuts, new revenue and simplify the tax code to neighboring just thrmake it jus brackets. president obama praised the proposal saying it was broadly consistent with his deficit goals. he also urged lawmakers to use the outlines to move toward a final deal.

>> we have the american people who agree with the balanced approach. my hope and what i will be urging speaker boehner, nancy pelosi as well as leader reid and mitch mcconnell, is that they tomorrow are prepared to start talking turkey and actually getting down to the hard business of crafting a plan that can move this forward. >> what we call talking turkey. the developments come as a new poll shows growing support for an increase in the debt ceiling with 38% favoring a hike compared to 16% that's just three months ago. the poll shows that more americans blame republicans, just 34% would put it on the president's shoulders. news that the stalemate could soon be over is giving a big boost to u.s. markets. the dow posting its best point

and percentage gain of the entire year yesterday. for more, we want to head to steve sedgwick in london with the latest. good day to you. >> very good day it to you. there wasn't just one thing that sent this market up yesterday. i think it was a whole most of matters. including the fact that we could be closer to ending that stalemate, including the fact that the housing starts were the best we've seen in six months and also the fact that across the board, we saw some really good earnings from some real big bellwethers in the u.s. corporate scene. >> if you can quickly apple one of those bellwethers with a blowout quarter, do you have some of those details? just amazing numbers. >> it really was a blowout and it sent the shares up to a new record high. the profit more than doubled to $7.3 billion. the revenue surged 82%. and it was the best quarter in

the company's history. they put out on to the market 20.34 million iphones. what was expected was 17 million to 18 million iphones. ipad 2s were also flying off the shelves. >> i added my name to that list, as well. steve sedgwick, appreciate it. some of the recent or rick is getting it testy in the debate over raising the debt ceiling. allen west sending a scathing personal e-mail to fellow congresswoman debbie wasserman schwartz. west tears into wasserman schultz writing in the subject line, quote, up professional and inappropriate sophomore rick behavior from wasserman schultz. west also writes, you want a personal fight, i'm happy to ob blige. you are the most vile, unprofessional and despicable member of the u.s. house of representatives. if you have something to say to me, stop being a kourd and say to my face. otherwise, shut the heck up.

you have proven repeatedly that you are not a lady, therefore, shall not be afforded due respect from me. good to see everybody's getting along well. west was responding to earlier comments that wasserman shut made about him on the house floor in which the democratic nags anational committee chairmn responded to the cut for cut, cap and balance. >> incredulously, jat from florida who represents thousands of medicare beneficiaries as do do i is supportive of this plan that would increase costs for medicare beneficiaries. unbelievable from a member from south florida. >> she called him the gentleman. he said shut the heck up. a spokesman for wasserman shut says he think west is upset that the congresswoman highlighted his tactics for balancing the budget. clearly. still ahead, do you remember where you were the last type the pirates were holding on to the top spot? the fight rat pirates are in fi

as we showed you, rupert murdoch's testimony was enter represented when a man shoved a shaving cream pie in the man's face. the guy's name is marbles. self proceed claimed comedian and activist. marbles was escorted out of the hearing in handcuffs charged with public disorder. luckily the only thing harmed in the incident was murdoch's ego, but he can take comfort in the fact that he joins a long profile list of public figures accosted by pie wielding hoodlums. we went deep into the archives for this. 1997, nicolas sarkozy drilled during a trip to brussels. he shakes it off. the same belgium pie prankster got bill gates and he got him good. bill gates, wow.
